African Petroleum Services & Safety Workshop, Malabo
(APPS 2008),
The Africa Petroleum Services and Safety workshop will be held alongside the 12th African Oil and Gas, Minerals, Trade and Finance in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The purpose of the workshop is to showcase the potential for service companies in the hydrocarbon sector of African countries, and to facilitate discussion and exchange of ideas amongst key players within the industry on health and safety issues as well as best practices.
African Oil Industry:
Africa is a significant contributor to world hydrocarbon supplies, accounting for 12.1% of total world oil production and 6.3% of natural gas. Its booming hydrocarbon industry is bolstered by proved reserves of 117bn barrels of oil and 14.18 trillion cubic metres (500.67 cubic feet). These reserves are largely contained in onshore and offshore basins (shallow and deepwater) located in Libya, Nigeria, Angola, Algeria and Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan as well as Chad, Gabon, Congo, Cameroun, Tunisia, Côte d'Ivoire, Mauritania, DR Congo, Madagascar, etc. Exploration and production activity is rising very fast in Africa, particularly in offshore West Africa where over 6.5 billion barrels of oil has been discovered in the last 2 years, and the bulk of growth in production originates.
The downstream oil industry comprises 39 operating refineries of which 21 are located in North Africa, 11 in West and Central Africa and 7 in Southern and Eastern Africa. Many of the refineries located in SSA operate under sub optimal conditions due to technical and supply problems and are also in need of investment in upgrading as well as stringent safety measures. Africa's total distillation capacity is estimated at 4 million barrels per day, representing 3.4% of the world total. In addition to fuels, Africa has an active lubricants industry which encompasses base oil refining, lubricant blend, distribution and marketing.
